. this is really the cornerstone of his midwest firewall. if mitt romney can't win ohio, it is nearly impossible for him to win the presidency. and right now polls show that president obama is holding onto a modest lead here in the buckeye state. president obama made three stops here on friday. and really what was a campaign all-out blitz, two of those stops, by the way, alex, were in counties that he lost back in 2008. he's hoping to kick off some of those working-class voters. he's doing it by the auto bailout. that is something that is widely popular here that, of course, mitt romney opposed. widely popular because one out of every eight ohioans has a connection to the auto industry. president obama also touting what he called an economy that is in recovery. he referenced friday's jobs report to do it. take a listen. >> in 2008 we were in the middle of two wars, and the worst economic crisis since the great depression. today our businesses have created nearly 5.5 million new jobs and this morning we learned the company's hired more workers in october than at any time in the last eight months.
. >> hello, ohio! >> god bless ohio. >> reporter: president obama and mitt romney's campaigns are practically camped out here. and each candidate has made multicity tours of the state just this week. winning ohio is critical for both. but because of the electoral mass, it's much more so for romney. whose victory may well depend on the state's 18 electoral votes. david cohen is a professor of political skoins at the university of ago ron. >> no republican has ever taken the white house without taking the state of ohio. and only a couple times has a democrat done so. to clearly it is an important state. >> reporter: but also a complex one. the two driving forces of growth here play into the messages of both campaigns. mr. obama points to his administration's auto rescue for saving jobs. and romney emphasizes the need for domestic energy production as an economic engine for the area. >> we've had a lot of positive economic news over the last couple of months. and so the question is, is it too close to the election to really make an impact on people's votes? or are people still kind of weighing t
here in ohio. we expect to see president obama and governor romney hit these battle grounds hard over the next ten days. ohio is perhaps the most important of them, especially for governor romney. because no republican candidate has won the white house, alex, without winning this state. last night as you mentioned, he and paul ryan held a huge rally in north canton last night, about 8,000 people according to the campaign braved some pretty brisk temperatures. the governor is asking for their help in this state because the latest cnn poll just out a few days ago shows that the president is up four points. 50-46. now that lead is about half of what it was a few weeks ago. so the governor has chipped away at that lead but still has a ways to go. they want to get their graund game out, get people out to early vote and then get people out to the polls on november 6th. governor romney is going to campaign with florida senator marco rubio and paul ryan is going to hit this state hard over the next 48 hours. they really expect to win here. rob portman, who was governor romney's debate partner

will listen to a mitt romney rally today. in ohio, live. >> i know how to do it and that is why i believe on november 6 you will give me the nod and i will become the next president. now, the talk is remarkably cheap. four years ago then candidate obama, promised so very much but he has fallen so far short of what he promised. as senator portman said, he promised he would have a post partisan presidency. but it has been the most partisan i have seen with the bitterness and division and demon savings, hallmarks of the presidency. he said he would focus on creating jobs but instead he focused on creating obamacare which killed jobs. he said he would cut the deficit in half but it doubled. he said he would get unemployment to 5.2 percent and today it ticked up to 7.9 percent. that is 9 million jobs short 789 those are real americans. can't find work. 23 million in work can't find work or work that is up to their needs. this is a critical time. the president was a president who took office with the economy as the number one challenge and he has high are unemployment today than when he took of
for the president. how does governor romney make the case that it would get way better way sooner if ohio makes a change for romney, ali? >> well, he does it by approximating to some degree. he does it by saying this state has prospered under a republican governor. look, this is a state that is split. it's a virtual dead heat. obama's got a bit of a lead, but as you know it's within that statistical margin of error so it could be a few points off one way or the other. it will come down to who comes out to vote. the last few days will be about encouraging those who have already decided. there's very little left in terms of evidence as to what you could do to possibly tell people i'm your guy. the question is you are sort of leaning towards me. do i go out and do it. mitt romney has made some errors in the last week or so in ohio, particularly with this issue of jeep and chrysler, getting money in the auto bailout and supposedly transferring manufacturing, having intention to transfer manufacturing to china. that is not playing well in ohio. >> let's talk about how the polls are playing in ohio.
different ideas of what this elect tort is going to look like. gwen: let's go gown to ohio where mitt romney is tonight as we -- let's go down to ohio where mitt romney's speaking. is it true that ohio is what all of this turns on? >> i would say yes. right. but we have been surprised so many times in elections. and it was in 2004, i remember i was in columbus, ohio in 2004. and, you know, i guess i'd have to predict that the president will win it for the very reasons amy was saying. gwen: ooh, ooh. that's scary. you made a prediction. i've got it on tape. i can roll it back. i wonder if it plays into that demographic divide. is it the example of what we're talking about? >> well, it's actually different -- >> why? >> well, the white vote falls differently in the state of ohio than it does in other places. blue collar whites -- >> the auto bailout. >> the auto bailout, the fact that mitt romney opposed to auto bailout and also his characteristics as a very wealthy financial executive who has been pounded by democratic adds in a concentrated way, that sort of changed the chemistry of that sta

the first debate. and polls show he's now in a virtual tie with the president. but in ohio, romney has seen much smaller gains. mr. obama has consist enly lead in the polls here and still holds an average of a 2 to 3 point lead. with the resurgence of the auto industry, new steal production and the promise of large natural gas reserves, you can sense the optimism here in northeast ohio. but a big question now is whether democratic strongholds like youngstown will give mr. obama enough margin to carry the state and stay in the white house. mr. obama's popularity here is maintained by strong support from autoworkers like union president green. >> in march everything almost came to a halt, right. the contractors we had in the plant were backing off. there were helicopters flying over our plant taking inventory, people walking through our plant with clipboards taking inventory. they were going to liquidate our facility. that's a fact. so mitt romney can air brush this all i wants. that's what was happening at the time. the fact that president obama stood up and said i'm going take a bet on the

as if they believe they are behind at least when it comes to the state of ohio. for starters, the romney campaign likely would not be airing this controversial jeep ad if they believe they were winning. both chrysler and gm are firing back at romney. chrysler ceo said in a statement jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the united states and will con sstitute th backbone of the grand. it is inaccurate to suggest anything different. a gm spokesman told the detroit news, quote, we've clearly enter ed some parallel universe during the last few days, no amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish the record of creating jobs in the united states. remember, this new romney jeep ad claims that all factual statements in it, the implication is different, but the statements themselves say jeep is being built in china, which the ad says for the implication, of course, is this idea that they're moving some operations out of ohio to china and that's what both gm and chrysler are fighting back on is that perception. ohio papers pummeling romney for the ad. they called it a ploy in

mitt romney last thursday in defiance, ohio, about an hour away from toledo. >> i saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, jeep, now owned by the italians, is thinking of moving all production to china. i will fight for every good job in america. i'm going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it's fair, america will win. >> sounds terrible, but it's false. did you hear that, false, what he just said. chrysler which was bought by fiat said it's not taking any jobs from ohioans, it's adding jobs. also plans on resuming jeep production in china for chinese drivers. in other words, overseas production, overseas sales. not moving jobs from the united states to china. then comes this whopper of a romney ad. customarily when one of the campaigns launch a commercial, they send us press releases and video. not this one. this started running unannounced in ohio and suggests again that jobs are moving to china. >> who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama. fact-checkers confirm his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a

and the president was going to carry ohio. it's a lot different this year because the romney campaign have enough to get over the top, that's the question we'll answer in the next hundred hours or so, but the intensity at the romney campaign was off the charts. governor romney's expecting some 30,000 people in ohio tonight not that the ohio people aren't working hard, too. they have a very impressive obama operation, but the republican operation compared to four years ago, it's not a comparison. much better. we're going to have an interesting day come tuesday. >> it's going to be exciting for the whole country. >>> last minute moves. a strategy that's either desperate or brilliant, depending on who you ask. mitt romney is making an 11th hour push for pennsylvania. a jackpot with 20 electoral votes. pouring 6 million into the state on advertising. he's never led in a single poll there since he became a nominee. cnn has that in the obama category, but the president's lead has been shrinking and polls show president obama had been up as much 11 and 1 points over the summer and fall, but in a quinnip

for governor romney and that is the state of ohio. historically no republican candidate has won the election without taking this battleground state. the latest poll shows governor romney in a dead heat with the president both at 48% and as obama is relying mainly on the quote auto bailout for a victor arery in the state, voters are more concerned about the overall economy. romney is leading obama when it comes to the handling of the economy. joining us is michael barone. what do you think? >> what is happening in ohio? well, this was one of the three firewall states. the obama campaign wanted to concentrate on three states where they got the lowest winning percentages in 2008 except for indiana and north carolina which they conceded, florida, ohio and virginia. since the october 3 debate, florida seems to be gone toward mitt romney. he has been winning almost all polls this. virginia has been even tending a little toward romney in my judgment. ohio has been a little stickier. are the auto bailout is an issue there. if you look at the polls what you will see is white noncollege voters. a grou

of people in sandy's path. romney did have events scheduled today in ohio but now he's telling the state not only to support the east coast during the storm but also to support the entire country by electing him as president. if we did have a romney presidency, disaster relief could be very different. during a primary debate earlier this season, romney seemed to be absolutely in favor of shutting fema down. now that we are in the middle of a natural disaster, he says no. he wouldn't shut it down. he would just send more power to the states. fema is already bracing for relief efforts once hurricane sandy clears out. more than 1500 staff are positioned along the east coast to help with search and rescue and logistical support. thankfully for those on the east coast, fema has nearly $8 billion available for disaster relief. but during last year's budget deal paul ryan designed a bill that would have gotten rid of some emergency funding. he instead wanted money to go toward the military. that bill passed the house wi
